Highest UK chart position 53 (1985)
I first came across the Kane Gang on a Kid Jensen session back in 1984, followed shortly by John Peel playing Brother Brother, their debut single on his show on the same night. The band were also featured on kid’s tv shows of the day and were no strangers to Top Of The Pops, The Tube or The Old Grey Whistle Test, which were the ways to build a widespread following back then. An appearance on Crackerjack follows down the page.
I went on to buy several of their singles and their debut album.
The band hailed from the North East of England and came to prominence in 1984 when they signed with London records. They’d had a couple of chart hits with Closest Thing To Heaven, Respect Yourself (Staple Sisters cover) both from their album The Bad and Lowdown World of the Kane Gang. They were also responsible for the “Ooh Gary Davies On Your Radio” and the Byker Grove theme which both came out of their early single Small Town Creed.

Gun Law was a fave of mine at the time of its release in 1985 and arrived in my collection as a gatefold double-vinyl 7 inch which I picked up from The Record Shop in Kingston.
In my mind this was a massive hit (I certainly played it a lot at the time) but this track peaked at 53.
